Ukraine carrier cargo plane, reportedly carrying explosives, crashes in Greece

An Antonov cargo aircraft operated by an airline based in Ukraine crashed on Saturday near the city of Kavala in North Greece, said the authorities.Greek civilian aviation authorities said the flight headed from Serbia to Jordan, but could not confirm how many people were on the ship or what the cargo of the aircraft was. It was operated by Meridian, cargo carrier.

The pilot succeeded in reminding the authorities about the problem in one of the aircraft engines and he was given a landing option at Thessaloniki or Kavala airport. He chose Kavala, who was closer, but the plane crashed about 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the west of the airport, said the Greek Civil Aviation Authority.”We heard the explosion until a few minutes ago,” Filippos Anastassiadis, Mayor of Paggaio Municipality, told The Associated Press. “I was about 300 meters from the location of the accident.”

The explosion has triggered speculation between local residents and several Greek media, the plane carries explosives.The ERT state announcer reported that the army explosives were on the way to the location, which is located in agricultural land near two villages which is part of the Paggaio Municipality.Fire extinguishers have closed the area.
