Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday denied that Moscow used energy as a “weapon”, a few days after Russia stopped sending natural gas through the main pipe to Europe. “They say that Russia uses energy as a weapon. More than nonsense! What weapons do we use? We give as much as needed according to the demand” from the importer, Putin told the Eastern Economic Forum in the Pacific Port City Vladivostok.

Russian gas giant Gazprom said on Friday that the Nord Stream pipe because it was reopened on the weekend after three days of maintenance would remain closed for repairs. Kremlin said sanctions had blocked the return of Siemens turbine who had undergone improvements in Canada. Give as a turbine, we will change the Nord Stream on tomorrow, said Putin. “We are ready to do this tomorrow, just need to press the button. But we are not the person who introduces sanctions,” Putin added. Speaking of the possibility of Russian natural gas prices, Putin said it was “other stupidity” and “other non-market solutions without prospects”.

“If European countries want to let go of their competitive advantage, it’s up to them,” Putin said, adding that Russia was ready to work with “any country”. Following the imposition of economic sanctions for the Kremlin offensive on Ukraine, Russia has reduced or stopped supply to various European countries, causing energy prices to soar. EU has accused Moscow of using energy as extortion.
