Colombo: Galle Face Green The Popular Promenade in the Capital of Sri Lanka Colombo has become a Ground Zero for protests inside and around Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Protests at the 5-hectare strip which now covers a popular area called the village of ‘Gota Go’ ‘drawing in common with Tahrir Square Egypt during the Arab spring and Chennai’s Marina Beach during protests for Jallikuttu – Sport Bull-Taming -In 2017.
In the midst of high inflation, a decrease in foreign exchange reserves, fuel shortages, power outages, drug shortages, and increased cost of life, ‘Goa Go’ village have witnessed the atmosphere such as carnival when residents of all walks of life join hands to protest the government.
Young men and women’s scores now live in the day and night, right next to the presidential secretariat, within a distance like city tent resistance. The protesters who are part of the ‘Occupy Galle Face’ movement have a simple message to the most powerful man in the country – “We will not go home unless you do it.”
Protests gaining strength
The residents’ rebellion that has built more than a month has increased over the past week with protesters, especially young people, decided to ‘occupy the face of Galle’, stretch facing the presidential secretariat. Dozens of tents popped up in the area, where several demonstrators remained overnight, and thousands gathered in the venue all day and also to the night, carrying posters sharply critical of the government.The government has tried to stop this protest on Saturday when the police moved in the truck fleet, however, defenses were avoided because the vehicle was removed after a few hours.
“The Sri Lankan Bar Association (BASL) received credible information from its members from several police trucks transferred to the surrounding Galle Face Green, where there was a mass protest that was ongoing. Trucks have now been removed after being highlighted on social media and taken to Notification of the authorities, “The Sri Lankan Bar Association released a statement on Friday.
Protest going strong since April 9
Since April 9, the number has swelled on Galle Green’s face. The unnamed sponsor has prepared food, water stalls, and even pharmacies to provide medicine. Tents also come for camping people. Children’s care centers on the site do reading and drawing classes for toddlers. The public library in the village works as a nerve center where suggestions are invited from protesters to increase state accountability. Portable Toilets, Phone Charging Stations, Power Plants, Stoves, Gas Cylinders, Health Care from the Sri Lankan Red Cross Community with Ambulances, and ‘Psychology Units’ offer counseling for protesters. Some protesters survived in that place since then, sleeping in temporary tents that challenged big storms, as experienced by Colombo last week.
The atmosphere like the carnival has drawn the audience and visitors who want to know. The number of protesters swelled at night when many came to fly kites with ‘Gota Goa’ written on top of them, dog owners carry their pets along with similar slogan boards to welcome people to take photos of their pooches.
The microphone available on the protest site provides a platform for people to voice their opinions freely.
