When NASA prepares to send humans back to the moon, this time with the aim of building a month base, it covers every aspect that will make the base safer. One of these aspects is to understand how fires behave in space, so engineers can design safe houses on the moon. To make it happen, NASA launched a new experiment to the International Space Station (ISS) to study Flammability and tame fire in a less-known space environment.

The SoFIE project

Short for solid fuel ignition and experiments, Sofie experiments will be launched to the onboard Northbow NORTHROP Grumman’s ISS 17th tapping mission targeted for February 19. NASA said that fires behave differently in space and more difficult to change in gravitational space and air flow can change the way of spreading. This new experiment is important to wear plans for infrastructure on the moon, where only 12 people walk so far and finally for Mars, where no human has ever stepped foot. Paul Ferkul, Sofie Project Scientist at NASA’s Glenn Research Center said according to NASA’s statement,

Using data from this experiment, NASA will also choose materials and designs for spaceuits, cabins, and habitat and identify the best ways to extinguish fires or burning materials in space. Lauren Brown’s project manager said that this experiment was built on the previous Flammability NASA research but “will provide the basis for continuing human spaceflight outside the Low Earth Orbit”. The agency plans to operate Sofie until November 2025 and a total of five investigations to learn the convenience of the convenience of plexiglass, cotton-based cloth, and other ingredients commonly used in space lights will be carried out. While the experiment will begin with the aim of learning the safety of fires in space, data from the same can also be used to improve fire security on earth, said NASA.
