Increasing cross-border trade in Ireland as a result of the Northern Ireland protocol is “in many ways of problems”, Brexit Minister Britain has said.

The protocol makes it more difficult for businesses in both parts of Ireland to import goods from the UK.

Which has contributed to a surge in trade between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Lord Frost said this was a problem because it showed the Northern Ireland company could not use their first choice supplier.

“I don’t think it really makes sense for us to encourage more development, rather than deal with the consequences of it,” he told the House of Lords Committee.

The protocol, which according to God Frost, keeps Northern Ireland in the UE single market for goods, which means that the product that arrives from the United Kingdom is subject to new checks and controls.

  • What is the Northern Ireland protocol?
  • Cross-border trade surge continues
  • Cross-border trade in Ireland ‘increases dramatically’

Items that come from the UK to the Republic of Ireland face a similar process.

However, trade trading across the Irish border remains like before Brexit, without a new check and control.

It has encouraged several businesses to find more products on the Island of Ireland than from England.

In the first quarter of 2021, the export of Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland rose 60% to more than € 1 billion (£ 859 million).

The trade value in the other direction rose 40% to € 977m (£ 841 million).

Lord Frost also gave a skeptical response to the EU proposal to guarantee the free flow of drugs from England to Northern Ireland.

The protocol means Northern Ireland is still in the UE pharmaceutical regulatory system while the big English is not.

Northern Ireland gets most of his medicines from distributors in the UK, but it will become more difficult in January when the grace period ends.

The EU said it has identified “creative solutions” with problems that will involve changes in the UE law.

Lord Frost described the European Union’s plan as a “brave effort” and “quite complicated” but he did not convince them related to all potential problems.

‘Break New Ground’

He told the committee that he had sent a detailed proposal to the EU on agricultural agricultural problems.

Check about food products that move from England to Northern Ireland is the biggest practical difficulty created by the protocol.

Lord Frost’s plan is based on the EU recognizing that the rules and standards of British Agri-food are equivalent to them themselves.

The EU has limited equivalency agreements with several countries, such as New Zealand, which reduces the need for inspection on several products.

Lord Frost recognizes that the proposition is broader than this existing equality agreement and will require the EU to “solve new land”.
